Tire Tips
- Keep tires inflated correctly and
use proper size for your vehicle.
- When the vehicle is carrying extra
weight, additional air is needed. Add 4lbs over the vehicle
manufacturer’s cold air pressure but DO NOT exceed
the inflation limit on the side of the tire.
- Check tire pressure at least twice
a month.
- Never mix tires of different sizes
or constructions on the same axle.
- Tires now have a wear rib indicator
molded across the tread. This shows the minimum safe tread
depth (0.25 cm or 2/32 of an inch). It is illegal to drive
on anything less than this in Canada.

Tires provide traction, which allows the vehicle
to move from a stationary position to the direction one desires.
Tires also help soften the bumps and jumps that are felt on the
road. Tires are constructed of many layers of rubber, steel and
synthetic fiber.
The numbers and letters on the tires sidewall represent certain
construction of the tire:
P – passenger
LT – light truck
T – temporary
C – commercial
The number e.g. 185, 205, 235 etc. represent
the tires width in millimeters. The second set of numbers 75, 60,
55, 40 etc. represents the aspect ratio, meaning the tire is 75,
60, 55, or 40 percent, or ratio, of height to width. The higher
the aspect ratio the higher the tire stands. The letters T, V, H
are the speed rating for that tire, meaning that is the highest
speed the tire should be operated at. The number 14, 15, 16, 17
is your rim diameter in inches. Thus a P235-75R15 is a passenger
235 mm wide, 75% of 235 (177mm) in sidewall height, R for radial
on a 15” wheel.
